Okay, so, I’ve been meaning to do something about the whole stray cat situation in my neighborhood for a while now. I decided to make a cat birth box. I love these little guys, and I figured a safe, comfy place for them to have their kittens is the least I can do. So here’s how it went down.
First, I needed a box. I rummaged through my garage and found an old cardboard box I thought was sturdy enough. Then, I grabbed some tools, some old blankets, and got to work.
Step 1: Reinforcing the Box
- I started by reinforcing the box. Cardboard can get soggy and gross, especially outside. I used some heavy-duty tape to strengthen the corners and the bottom. I figured this would also help keep the box intact a bit longer.
Step 2: Making It Cozy
- Next, I lined the inside of the box with some old blankets. I folded them up real nice to make a soft, warm bed. Cats like to be cozy, so I made sure it was extra cushy. I also cut a small doorway in the front, just big enough for a cat to get in and out easily, but not so big that it would let all the heat out.
Step 3: Weatherproofing
- Since this box was going to be outside, I had to think about the weather. I found a large plastic sheet, like a tarp, and wrapped the entire box with it. I secured it with more tape, making sure to cover all the cardboard. The doorway was the only part I left open.
Step 4: Placement
- Now, the placement of the box was important. I wanted it to be somewhere safe and somewhat hidden, so the cats would feel secure. I found a spot under a bush in my backyard that seemed perfect. It’s out of the way, protected from the rain, and pretty discreet.
Final Touches
I added a little sign that says “Cat Birth Box” just for fun. I also put some cat food and water nearby, hoping to attract some pregnant strays. It took a few days, but I finally saw a mama cat checking it out. She seemed to like it, and I felt pretty good about the whole thing. Who knows, maybe soon there will be some cute little kittens in there.
It’s not much, but it’s something. I’m just hoping this little project makes a difference for the stray cats around here. It was a simple thing to do, and honestly, it made me feel good to do something nice for these animals. They deserve a safe place to give birth, and I’m glad I could provide that.
