Okay, so my Maine Coon, Merlin, is a BIG boy. I mean, seriously huge. Finding a litter box that he could comfortably use was turning into a real quest. I felt like I was searching for the Holy Grail of cat toilets!
The Struggle Was Real
I started, like everyone else, with your standard pet store litter boxes. You know, the plastic ones that come in various vaguely “cat-appropriate” colors. Nope. Way too small. Merlin would either hang half his body out, resulting in, ahem, messes outside the box, or he’d just look at me with these pitiful eyes like, “Seriously, Mom? You expect me to fit in that?”
The Cardboard Box Phase
Then I tried a series of increasingly larger cardboard boxes. I figured, hey, cheap, disposable, and I could customize the size. This worked… sort of. For a while. Until Merlin decided that the corner of the box was the perfect place to, well, you know. Cardboard and liquid do not mix well, folks. Let’s just say there were some unpleasant clean-up situations.
The DIY Experiment
Next, I got ambitious. I went to the home improvement store and bought a large, shallow plastic storage bin. The kind you’d use for under-bed storage. I thought, “Aha! I’ve cracked the code!” I even cut a low entry point in one side to make it easier for him to get in and out.
Pros:
- It was definitely big enough. Plenty of room for Merlin to turn around, dig, and do his business without feeling cramped.
- The plastic was easy to clean. A quick wipe-down, and we were good to go.
Cons:
- It was, admittedly, kind of ugly. A giant plastic bin in the middle of my bathroom wasn’t exactly the most aesthetically pleasing solution.
- Even with the cut-out entry, it was still a bit of a leap for him, especially as he’s getting older.
Finally, Success!
I used a large plastic storage container,It’s huge, and Merlin loves it!.
It’s not the prettiest thing, but it’s very large and deep, giving my cat lots of space to move. It’s durable and easy to clean, a major * importantly,Merlin took to it immediately! He can comfortably turn around, dig, and, most importantly, everything stays inside the box. No more messes on the floor! It’s like a cat litter box miracle!
So, if you have a giant Maine Coon, I recommend,get a very large plastic box. It might take some trial and error, but your cat (and your floors) will thank you!
