Kitten Whelping Box Setup: Make a Comfy Space for Mom and Babies

Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to make a kitten whelping box for a while now, ’cause my cat’s pregnant, and I figured it’d be a nice little project. Plus, it’s way cheaper than buying one of those fancy ones from the pet store.

Kitten Whelping Box Setup: Make a Comfy Space for Mom and Babies

First, I gathered all the stuff I needed. I grabbed a big cardboard box from the grocery store—the kind they use for bananas. You want one that’s sturdy and has some height to it. Then, I picked up some soft blankets, an old towel, and a heating pad.

Next, I got to work on the box. I cut one of the sides down a bit, so the mama cat could get in and out easily but the kittens wouldn’t be able to wander off. It was a bit tricky getting it even, but I think I did alright. I didn’t make it too low, just enough for her to step over comfortably.

After that, I lined the bottom of the box with the old towel. This is just for extra padding and to make cleanup easier. Then, I placed the heating pad on one side of the box, underneath the towel. You gotta be careful with these things, so I only set it to low. Don’t want to roast the little furballs!

Then came the fun part—making it cozy! I folded up the soft blankets and arranged them inside, making sure to cover the heating pad area but also leaving a cooler spot on the other side. Mama cat needs options, you know?

Finishing Touches

  • I made sure there were no sharp edges or anything that could hurt the kittens.
  • I placed the box in a quiet, out-of-the-way spot in my house. Cats like their privacy, especially when they’re about to pop out a bunch of babies.
  • I also kept some food and water nearby, so she wouldn’t have to go far.

Honestly, the whole thing took me maybe an hour or two, and it was pretty satisfying to see it all come together. Now it’s just a waiting game until the kittens arrive. I’m pretty sure my cat appreciates the effort, she’s been sniffing around it and giving me those slow blinks. You know, the ones that say, “You’re alright, human.”

Anyway, that’s my little DIY project. Hope it gives you some ideas if you’re ever in need of a cheap and easy whelping box. It ain’t fancy, but it gets the job done. And hey, saving a few bucks is always a good thing, right?
