Okay, so I’ve been thinking about switching up my cat’s litter box situation. She’s been using a plastic one forever, and honestly, it’s kind of gross. It gets scratched up, holds onto odors, and just feels… flimsy. I started wondering if a stainless steel litter box would be better, so I did a test, and here’s how it all went down.

The Great Litter Box Experiment Begins
First, I got a stainless steel litter box. It wasn’t cheap, but I figured if it lasted longer and was easier to clean, it would be worth it. I also kept the old plastic one around, just in case my cat, Mittens, totally rejected the new one. You know how cats can be. Picky little things.
Setting the Stage
I put both litter boxes side-by-side in the same spot where her old one usually is. I filled them both with the same type of litter, the clumping clay stuff she’s used to. I wanted to make sure the only difference was the box itself.
Observation Time
For the first few hours, Mittens just sniffed around the new stainless steel box. She seemed curious, but not totally convinced. She used her old plastic box a couple of times, like normal.
- Day 1: Mostly using the old plastic box. A lot of sniffing at the new one.
- Day 2: Okay, this is interesting. She peed in the stainless steel box! Just once, but it’s a start.
- Day 3: More of the same. One pee in the stainless steel, the rest in the plastic.
- Day 4: Boom! She pooped in the stainless steel box! Still using the plastic one too, but definitely showing interest in the new one.
- Days 5-7: It’s about a 50/50 split now. She’s using both boxes pretty equally.
Cleaning Time – The Real Test
After a week, it was time to clean. This is where the stainless steel really shined (pun intended!). It was SO much easier to scoop. The litter didn’t stick to the sides like it does with the plastic one. And the smell? Way less noticeable. The plastic box always seems to hold onto that ammonia smell, even after you clean it. The stainless steel one just wiped clean and felt… fresher.
The Verdict?
After observing and cleaning both for weeks, I felt good to make a conclusion. Mittens definitely seems to like the stainless steel litter box, the transition was a bit slow, she still seems to appreciate the new * me? I love it for good! It’s easier to clean, smells better, and I’m hoping it’ll last for years. I’m calling it a win-win!
