Okay, so my cat started sneezing. A lot. Not just a little ‘achoo’ here and there, but full-on sneezing fits sometimes. At first, I didn’t think much of it. Cats sneeze, right? Maybe some dust tickled his nose.

But it kept going on for days, then weeks. It wasn’t stopping. I started watching him more closely. When did it happen? Was it after he ate? After he used the litter box? After I cleaned?
My first step was thinking about dust. My place isn’t exactly spotless, let’s be real. So, I went on a cleaning spree. Vacuumed everywhere, dusted all the surfaces, washed his blankets. I mean, I really tried to get rid of any potential dust bunnies attacking his nose. It seemed to help a tiny bit, maybe? But the sneezing didn’t really stop.
Next, I considered the litter box. Was the litter too dusty? I hadn’t changed brands, but maybe this bag was different? I went out and bought a ‘low dust’ formula. Switched it out. Watched him. Still sneezing. Okay, probably not the litter then.
Then I thought, could it be something else in the air?
- Maybe the air freshener I used? Stopped using it.
- Pollen from outside? Kept the windows closed more often.
- Cleaning products? Made sure everything was super rinsed or switched to plainer stuff.
Nothing seemed to make a big difference. He was still sneezing way more than seemed normal. He didn’t seem sick otherwise – still eating, playing, being his usual furry self. But the sneezing worried me.
Figured it was time to stop guessing.
I couldn’t figure it out on my own. Maybe it was something more serious? I made an appointment with the vet. Explained everything I’d noticed and tried.
The vet gave him a good check-up. Looked in his nose, eyes, ears, listened to his chest. She said it could be a few things. Maybe allergies that my cleaning didn’t solve, or possibly a mild little cat cold (like an upper respiratory thing). She said sometimes it’s hard to know for sure without lots of tests.

She suggested we try some simple treatment first, maybe an antihistamine to see if it helped with potential allergies. She gave me some meds to give him for a little while.
And guess what? After about a week on the medication, the sneezing really calmed down! He still sneezes occasionally, like any normal cat, but those constant fits stopped. It seems like he’s just got some sensitivities to something in the environment – dust mites, maybe pollen, who knows for sure.
So, my takeaway? Keeping things reasonably clean is good, but sometimes you just can’t fix it yourself. If your cat is sneezing a whole lot and it’s not getting better, probably best to just get them checked out by a vet. Saved me a lot more guessing and worry.
